Melania Levitsky Reads from “The Gold in the Ground”
March 7, 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pmFree
Melania Levitsky reads from her children’s book, “The Gold in the Ground,” and presents her original illustrations at the Chatham Bookstore on Saturday, March 7, at 3 p.m. Based on a folk tale from Kazakhstan, “The Gold in the Ground” tells the story of a farmer and a shepherd finding a pot of gold that nobody wants. The artwork from the book is on display through April 26. Refreshments will be served.
After coming across the folk tale, Levitsky wrote “The Gold in the Ground” as a play for nine actors, with music and songs from Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Iraq, with costumes and props, traditional prayers, and dancing. The play was performed in 39 different schools and theaters over the course of three years.
Melania Levitsky has been working in Columbia County since 1991 as actor, director, and teacher with The Actors’ Ensemble, Shakespeare Alive!, Walking the dog Theater, and Nikita Productions. Each summer she directs the annual Shakespeare Festival in the Valley, a semi-professional company that involves the whole community in Harlemville, NY. She has written several play adaptations related to the life of Frederick Douglass and others based on the short stories of Anton Chekhov. She is trained in the Michael Chekhov method of acting.
Born in New York City, Levitsky grew up in Cincinnati, OH, and has traveled and worked abroad in Spain, England, France, Russia, and South Africa. She has a bachelor’s degree in Russian from Hunter College. She lives in Ghent, NY, and New York City.
