SUMMARY:PS21’s Free Performance Festival: Commonground
DESCRIPTION:Commonground is PS21’s annual free festival of large-scale contemporary performance and spectacle. A family-friendly celebration of the end of summer\, Commonground welcomes the community to PS21 for performances from renowned international artists across the PS21 landscape. \nThis year’s festival takes place September 4–7\, and features the world premiere of SUPERDRUM X\, a work featuring 100 self-playing drums by Dutch musical collective Touki Delphine featuring a different local drummer each night. Plus: the world premiere of FIELD\, a new PS21-commissioned performance by OBIE award-winning director\, writer\, and electronics artist Andrew Schneider\, that gently removes reality from its normal and turns it inside out. Sayer Mansfield’s DIVE BARN showcase of local artists rounds out the lineup.\nEach day\, we’ll have field day activities for the family leading up the performances: food trucks\, free ice cream\, apple picking\, lawn games\, and more. SUMMARY:Lenio Kaklea: The Birds
DESCRIPTION:PS21 kicks off L’Alliance New York’s Crossing The Line Festival—and brings it to upstate NY for the first time ever—with Athens-born\, Paris-based choreographer Lenio Kaklea’s The Birds. Drawing on the vivid plumage\, songs\, and movements of birds\, this striking new work reflects on what it means to be seen and heard—and deepens Kaklea’s inquiry into ecology and the human impact on our environment. \nSeven dancers shift between dynamic individuality and the cohesion of a migratory flock\, navigating the tensions of predator and prey. Referencing mating rituals and territorial defense\, Kaklea’s choreography probes a society where freedom and subjugation exist in an increasingly precarious balance. \nThe Birds was presented in November at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles after its premiere at Montpellier Danse in July 2025. Kaklea’s works have been performed at Centre Pompidou\, the National Theatre of Chaillot\, Sadler’s Wells\, Kunstenfestivaldesarts\, Festival d’Automne\, the Serpentine\, Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection\, Palazzo Grassi – Pinault Collection\, New York Live Arts\, ImPulsTanz International Dance Festival\, Athens and Epidaurus Festival\, the National Greek Opera\, and Les presses du réel. \nThe Birds is co-presented by PS21: Center for Contemporary Performance and L’Alliance New York’s Crossing The Line Festival\nLead image © Albert Vidal and Vertex Comunicacio
