SUMMARY:I LIKE IT HERE Screening and Filmmaker Q+A
DESCRIPTION:Renowned documentary filmmaker Ralph Arlyck has never denied his urge to pick up a camera and document his life on film. Now\, as he approaches his 80s\, he delicately stitches this archive together to craft a compelling reflection on mortality\, community\, and the passage of time. Like having a conversation with an excellent interlocutor\, his poignant visual essay meanders through a life well-lived\, guiding us through portraits of Arlyck’s loved ones as he ponders the effects of aging and eventual death. Layers of time and connections unfold as footage shot across multiple decades interplay with each other\, blurring he firm boundary between past and present. This gentle and personal film embraces the beauty of everyday life\, reminding us of the simple pleasure of being alive. In every frame\, he conveys how it feels to look back on your own life\, to contemplate your place in an ever-changing world\, and what to make of the time that remains. \nQ+A with the Filmmaker and FilmColumbia’s Laurence Kardish\nThis lovely and deeply felt rumination on aging and living life to its fullest will be directly followed by a Q+A with Arlyck and FilmColumbia’s Co-Artistic and Co-Executive Director Laurence Kardish. The pair will discuss issues that often get left out of conversations about aging—like navigating isolation\, fear of death or losing a partner\, or simply what it feels like to contend with mortality at any age. Retirement communities and senior living facilities are encouraged to bring their residents to join this lively discussion to examine the ideas explored in his films. \nTo inquire about group bookings\, contact Dawn Steward at dsteward@crandelltheatre.org or 518-392-3445.

SUMMARY:John Singer Sargent: Fashion & Swagger
DESCRIPTION:A sublime mix of fine art\, fashion and LGBTQ+ cultural history\, the latest documentary from Exhibition on Screen unpacks the spectacular gifts of painter John Singer Sargent\, the greatest artist of his time. What made his “swagger” portraits of high society men and women remarkable was his power over his affluent sitters\, influencing what they wore and how they were presented\, often among the luxuriant splendor of their magnificent homes. Consider “Madame X\,” his showstopper in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Sargent collection. Last year\, “Madame X” traveled to Boston to appear in the Museum of Fine Arts’ “Fashioned by Sargent\,” the blockbuster Sargent retrospective organized by\, and now on display at\, the Tate Britain in London through July 2024. If you can’t get to London and missed the exhibition stateside\, which included some 50 portraits and many original dresses and fashion accessories from his paintings\, this beautiful film will transport you headlong into Sargent’s world. Director David Bickerstaff interviews MFA and Tate Britain curators and experts who detail this master painter and stylist’s genius. The film returns to the Crandell on Thursday\, April 25\, at 7 pm.

SUMMARY:L’Étang (The Pond)\, by Gisèle Vienne
DESCRIPTION:Gisèle Vienne’s adaptation of Robert Walser’s bitter family drama\, with Pina Bausch dancer Julie Shanahan and César winner Adèle Haenel\, who play all ten roles\, and music by doom metal band Sunn O))) frontman Stephen O’Malley. Vienne upends conventional notions of theater and the family to create an unsettling experience that wavers/oscillates between interiority and exteriority. \n“a transfixing performance . . . my mind was as stimulated as it’s been in months.” Laura Cappelle\, The New York Times \nAn adaptation of a short play by Swiss writer Robert Walser (1878-1956)\, about a child who pretends to drown in order to test his mother’s love\, Gisèle Vienne’s work casts the ten roles of Walser’s original work between two virtuosic actors: Adele Haenel and Julie Shanahan. The work utilizes contrasts of story and movement\, an unsettling soundscape\, and the incredible gifts of the two actors to create multiple levels of perception of reality and temporality\, interiority and exteriority\, and magnify the family trauma central to Walser’s original piece. Delayed by COVID\, L’Étang premiered in Lausanne in May 2021\, and has since played to sold-out audiences and rave reviews throughout Europe. \n$10 student tickets available!

SUMMARY:US PREMIERE: Never Twenty One by Smaïl Kanouté / Compagnie Vivons! (France)
DESCRIPTION:Through evocative movements that interlace elements of krump\, popping\, baile funk\, and passinho into contemporary dance idioms\, the piece pays homage to young Black men in New York\, Rio de Janeiro\, and Johannesburg who have died from shootings. \nInspired by the Black Lives Matter movement’s #Never21 hashtag\, French-Malian choreographer and dancer Smaïl Kanouté’s deeply resonant piece—making its U.S. premiere—pays tribute to young people of color who have lost their lives to gun violence all over the world before reaching the age of 21. The performance\, separated into three segments\, focuses on the senseless deaths of young Black youth in New York\, Johannesburg\, and Rio de Janeiro. \nExcerpts of powerful testimonies from victims’ family members are transcribed on the dancers’ bodies\, combining dance and visual art. The dancers’ intense movement draws on contemporary and intuitive dance\, krump\, popping\, and baile funk in recounting the stories of many broken lives. \n$10 student tickets available!
