SUMMARY:FROM BEING WHERE YOU WERE Intensity 20.15: Grace Chase by Claire Chase together with This is Mary Brown by Winsome Brown
DESCRIPTION:Two unique works celebrating the life force of powerfully spirited women. For the first time\, Pauline Oliveros’ “Intensity 2015: Grace Chase” written for and performed by MacArthur Award and Avery Fisher prizewinning flutist Claire Chase\, and Winsome Brown’s poignant and hilarious play “This is Mary Brown” will be offered together as companion pieces. \nClaire Chase: “The most important flutist of our time.” – The New York Times \nWinsome Brown: “Ms. Brown is engrossing.” – The New York Times \n“Intensity 2015: Grace Chase” is a moving and genre-bending work of music\, theater\, and storytelling. Composed by Pauline Oliveros from texts by Chase’s grandmother\, it is an intimate and revelatory piece for flutes\, text\, and Expanded Instrument System\, a sound processing system invented by Oliveros. Levy Lorenzo accompanies. Winsome Brown directs this new staging. \nWinsome Brown’s monodrama “This is Mary Brown” is a funny and tender exploration of family\, addiction\, life\, and death. The New York Times called it\, “Lovely. Genuine\, touching\, quietly affecting.” The Scotsman called it\, “Warm and funny. Beautiful. Inspiring.” PS21 is pleased to present this new version of the play. \nChase and Brown have been friends for 15 years. These pieces mark the first time they have made art from their own family stories. Join us for an evening of friendship\, music\, and theater. The performances will be followed by a conversation between Chase and Brown.

SUMMARY:Janacek; Beethoven; Prokofiev; Finney\, with Miranda Cuckson (violin) and Blair McMillen (piano)
DESCRIPTION:Miranda Cuckson and Blair McMillen\, two internationally celebrated artists\, noted for their innate expressivity\, musical dexterity\, and boundlessly evident love for music and live performance return to PS21. \n“Her command of line and naturalness of expression leave little doubt that Miranda Cuckson is an artist to be reckoned with” – Gramophone \n“When played by the formidable Mr. McMillen\, any piece sounds terrific” – The New York Times \nPROGRAM\nLeoš Janáček: Violin Sonata\nLudwig van Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 8 in G major\nSergei Prokofiev: Violin Sonata No. 1 in F minor\, op. 80\nRoss Lee Finney: Fiddle-doodle-ad: Eight American Folk-Tunes \nEach of the four pieces on the program come from a very distinct personality and time and place\, but they have one important thing in common – they reflect on a similar experience. Whether overt or indirect\, each work can be heard as its composer’s response to war and wartime. \nAudiences will hear two very different and personal reactions in the aftermath of World War II. Sergei Prokofiev’s haunting\, visceral Violin Sonata No. 1 in F minor\, composed 1938-46\, is juxtaposed with Ross Lee Finney’s tender\, optimistic suite of folk tunes\, Fiddle-Doodle-Ad (1948). The sunny\, rambunctious disposition of Beethoven’s 8th Violin Sonata sets the context for some of Beethoven’s inner turmoil in the early 1800s. Beethoven was conflicted: he admired Napoleon Bonaparte\, but he also sensed that Napoleon had his military eye on Austria. \nShortly after the publication of this work\, Napoleon marched into Vienna and brazenly declared himself Austrian Emperor. Leoš Janáček’s turbulent Violin Sonata is steeped in Moravian folk music. “I wrote the Violin Sonata at the beginning of the war when we were expecting the Russians in Moravia\,” he said. But those hopes were dashed on August 1\, 1914\, when Germany declared war on Russia. Janáček later dramatically inscribed this momentous date into the manuscript of the Sonata\, which he published in 1922.

SUMMARY:L’Étang (The Pond)\, by Gisèle Vienne
DESCRIPTION:Gisèle Vienne’s adaptation of Robert Walser’s bitter family drama\, with Pina Bausch dancer Julie Shanahan and César winner Adèle Haenel\, who play all ten roles\, and music by doom metal band Sunn O))) frontman Stephen O’Malley. Vienne upends conventional notions of theater and the family to create an unsettling experience that wavers/oscillates between interiority and exteriority. \n“a transfixing performance . . . my mind was as stimulated as it’s been in months.” Laura Cappelle\, The New York Times \nAn adaptation of a short play by Swiss writer Robert Walser (1878-1956)\, about a child who pretends to drown in order to test his mother’s love\, Gisèle Vienne’s work casts the ten roles of Walser’s original work between two virtuosic actors: Adele Haenel and Julie Shanahan. The work utilizes contrasts of story and movement\, an unsettling soundscape\, and the incredible gifts of the two actors to create multiple levels of perception of reality and temporality\, interiority and exteriority\, and magnify the family trauma central to Walser’s original piece. Delayed by COVID\, L’Étang premiered in Lausanne in May 2021\, and has since played to sold-out audiences and rave reviews throughout Europe. \n$10 student tickets available!

SUMMARY:US PREMIERE: Never Twenty One by Smaïl Kanouté / Compagnie Vivons! (France)
DESCRIPTION:Through evocative movements that interlace elements of krump\, popping\, baile funk\, and passinho into contemporary dance idioms\, the piece pays homage to young Black men in New York\, Rio de Janeiro\, and Johannesburg who have died from shootings. \nInspired by the Black Lives Matter movement’s #Never21 hashtag\, French-Malian choreographer and dancer Smaïl Kanouté’s deeply resonant piece—making its U.S. premiere—pays tribute to young people of color who have lost their lives to gun violence all over the world before reaching the age of 21. The performance\, separated into three segments\, focuses on the senseless deaths of young Black youth in New York\, Johannesburg\, and Rio de Janeiro. \nExcerpts of powerful testimonies from victims’ family members are transcribed on the dancers’ bodies\, combining dance and visual art. The dancers’ intense movement draws on contemporary and intuitive dance\, krump\, popping\, and baile funk in recounting the stories of many broken lives. \n$10 student tickets available!

SUMMARY:An Immigrant's Story by Wanjiru Kamuyu
DESCRIPTION:Wanjiru Kamuyu questions the notions of place\, belonging and otherness. A cosmopolitan on three continents— Africa\, North America\, and Europe—wherever she decides to set up home\, is she considered an immigrant? \nA migratory map of encounters\, her dance starts with ballet\, studied during her childhood in Kenya\, then moves to contemporary dance after her parents moved the family to the USA. Kamuyu’s dance reveals her career journey and delights in dances from the African continent and diasporas\, as well as butõ. Her body is a constantly shifting map. \nKamuyu’s solo interrogates the gaze upon ‘the foreigner’ in a new space and society. The work uses satire to offer a critical eye on the notions of place and placement that are prevalent in today’s political discourse. \n“Having lived on three different continents has provided the privileged space and time to absorb different cultures and worldviews. The current critically sensitive (im)migration issue at the forefront of worldwide political debates has inspired me to re-examine my (im)migration stories and consequentially cultivated a desire to examine the notions of and politics surrounding the privileged vs. unprivileged (im)migrant\,” notes Kamuyu. \nThe show is performed in English. Show duration is 1 hour.
