DESCRIPTION:Wanjiru Kamuyu questions the notions of place\, belonging and otherness. A cosmopolitan on three continents— Africa\, North America\, and Europe—wherever she decides to set up home\, is she considered an immigrant? \nA migratory map of encounters\, her dance starts with ballet\, studied during her childhood in Kenya\, then moves to contemporary dance after her parents moved the family to the USA. Kamuyu’s dance reveals her career journey and delights in dances from the African continent and diasporas\, as well as butõ. Her body is a constantly shifting map. \nKamuyu’s solo interrogates the gaze upon ‘the foreigner’ in a new space and society. The work uses satire to offer a critical eye on the notions of place and placement that are prevalent in today’s political discourse. \n“Having lived on three different continents has provided the privileged space and time to absorb different cultures and worldviews. The current critically sensitive (im)migration issue at the forefront of worldwide political debates has inspired me to re-examine my (im)migration stories and consequentially cultivated a desire to examine the notions of and politics surrounding the privileged vs. unprivileged (im)migrant\,” notes Kamuyu. \nThe show is performed in English. DESCRIPTION:An immersive\, multi-media performance installation of aerial acrobatics\, photography\, and projected video\, and electronic music. \nFresh from the Venice Biennale 2023 and Tate Modern\, ANIMA alters our perspectives on the “sensation of time” and the pace and effects of climate change. \nAn immersive multidisciplinary installation by French visual artist/photographer Noémie Goudal\, theater director Maëlle Poésy\, circus artist Chloé Moglia\, and composer Chloé Thévenin\, ANIMA sits at the crossroads of visual\, photographic\, musical\, video\, and scenic arts. The work is grounded in the artists’ interest in recent discoveries in paleoclimatology\, the study of ancient climate\, whereby researchers are able to make projections about the future based on the metamorphoses and mutations that occurred in the distant past.  \nThese extreme mutations of terrestrial topography are imperceptible to the human gaze. Through the medium of images of palm trees\, rocks\, caves\, and water in continual metamorphosis projected onto a triptych of giant screens\, Goudal and Poésy confront the viewer with an experience of human impermanence. Thevenin’s music\, a mix of electronics and recordings of sounds of flowing water\, winds\, and wildlife coalesces with the images to create a sense of the fragility of landscapes\, the power of the elements\, and the vertiginous nature of time.

Allegro risoluto (1901)\nWang Huiran: Dance of the Yi People (1960)\n	for pipa solo\nTan Dun: Concerto for String Quartet and Pipa (1999) \nPerformed by the Ulysses Quartet\, Sun Li (pipa)\, Nuiko Wadden (harp) \nPLUS at 1 PM\, the Ulysses Quartet performs an intimate\, limited audience\, pay-as-you-wish event\, with seating on the theater stage\, featuring works by Beethoven and Zosha Di Castri. That is\, except for performing a solo show at the Mac-Haydn Theatre\, which he will check off the list this summer with Something Wonderful – an evening of his favorite tunes including Broadway classics. \nGeorge is joined on piano by Mac-Haydn Music Supervisor Eric Shorey\, who in addition to his work as an accompanist\, has performed across the country\, including performances at Paper Mill Playhouse\, Goodspeed Opera House\, North Shore Music Theatre\, and Arena Stage.

SUMMARY:“Save The Last Dance For Me” by Alessandro Sciarroni (Italy)
DESCRIPTION:From Italian theatermaker Alessandro Sciarroni\, recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Dance at the 2019 Venice Biennale\, an inventive revival of the polka chinata\, a nearly lost Bolognese courtship dance from the last century. \nThe polka chinata (crouched polka) is a rarity in ballroom dancing: it was performed exclusively by pairs of men. It originated in Bologna around 1900 and had nearly disappeared when Giancarlo Stagni\, a professor and dance master\, rediscovered it in the 1990s and began teaching it to his dancers. Theater-maker and choreographer Alessandro Sciarroni\, whose work inhabits the tension between tradition and modernity\, found the dance\, its hypnotic nature\, and its near-extinction fascinating. \nIn addition to the performance at PS21\, dancers Giovanfrancesco Giannini and Gianmaria Borzillo will lead free workshops in polka chinata following the performance for dancers and non-dancers\, diving into the polka and invoking the spirit of the community to save the dance from the brink of extinction.
