DESCRIPTION:Become a Member to join us for our season-opening Membership party and for free admission to Nuevo Flamenco artist Patricia Guerrero’s performance of a new work created especially for our open-air Pavilion Theater stage.\nPatricia Guerrero embodies the changing face of flamenco\, which UNESCO has declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity\, and is spearheading a new generation of younger flamenco artists redefining this traditional music and dance art form for the twenty-first century. Patricia Guerrero’s work combines modern and traditional elements of flamenco into a choreographic stream of consciousness that is both playful and contentious\, performative and private. Her dancing has been called “fast\, exciting\, and full of invention” by Dance Europe magazine. Guerrero will be joined by flamenco guitarist Guillermo Guillén and cantaor Ismael Fernández.

The program includes family short films\, tours of the theater\, photo opportunities with film celebrity cutouts\, and marquee cookies created for the occasion by Pooky Amsterdam of PookyStudio. Admission to the regularly scheduled 1 p.m. screening of The Eagle Huntress\, a spellbinding documentary about the first female eagle hunter in twelve generations of a nomadic Mongolian family\, is free for new and current members. Those who join the Crandell or renew their memberships on May 6 or anytime during May receive free admission to all films during the month.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 22\, 2 PM & 7:30 PM\nSunday\, April 23\, 2 PM \nOn the back of successful tours to the Sydney Opera House\, Finland\, and the UK in 2019\, and to the International Theatre Festival of Kerala\, India\, in January 2020\, “The Director” comes to PS21. \n“The Director” is a bold new performance starring Scott Turnbull\, a charismatic ex-funeral director of 21 years\, and artist Lara Thoms. Taking up a universal experience and taboo topic\, Turnbull and Thoms demystify and expose the death industry\, using humor and first-hand knowledge to dig a little deeper into what happens after we go. Nothing is off limits\, including the smell of a crematorium\, the tools of the mortuary\, and tractors driven into a funeral chapel. At a time when dying costs an average of $10\,000 and funerals happen within a week\, death can seem like a very expensive drive-thru meal. \nBlurring the roles of funeral director and theater director\, Thoms and Turnbull ask each other to perform tasks\, share knowledge\, and give feedback on each other’s actions. Balancing macabre reality\, playfulness and the tragic elements of death\, the result is a spiky\, funny and invigorating performance. \n“I was shaken as I left the theatre.
