SUMMARY:David Lang & Bill Morrison / Ensemble Contemporaneous - darker
DESCRIPTION:Film with Live Score / Music \nLive film score performed by Ensemble Contemporaneous \nDavid Lang and Bill Morrison have collaborated for nearly 25 years and darker is their tenth collaboration. \nLang and Morrison drew inspiration from a minimal score to create a film that\, like the music\, can exist both before and under the viewer’s eyelids: a slowly\, lilting depiction of the sublime\, where actors\, dancers and acrobats reappear and then disappear back into a bubbling morass of time. \nIn many ways darker is more like an object than a piece of music. An extreme exploration of emotional restraint\, darker is both highly detailed and relentlessly restrained\, requiring an almost superhuman focus in order to keep it moving\, inexorably\, towards its end. –David Lang \n“With his winning of the Pulitzer Prize for the little match girl passion (one of the most original and moving scores of recent years)\, Lang\, once a postminimalist enfant terrible\, has solidified his standing as an American master.” –The New Yorker

SUMMARY:Music by Peni Candra Rini with Andy McGraw / Director Garin Nugroho - Setan Jawa
DESCRIPTION:Film with Live Score / Music \nSetio\, a young poor man\, falls in love with Asih\, a beautiful aristocrat\, but the woman’s family rejects his marriage proposal. Despairing\, he makes a deal with the devil so he can spend the rest of his life with the woman he loves\, but his pact comes at a price. \nNugroho’s Setan Jawa is a silent film with live score created by celebrated Indonesian composer and singer\, Peni Candra Rini with Andy McGraw. The film explores Indonesia’s pre-orthodox Islamic stories of the seven deals man makes with the devil in order to gain wealth\, and the live score dramatically underpins the mysticism and sensuality of Nugroho’s tale of love and sacrifice. \nSetan Jawa evokes Javanese mythology through a lens of contemporary horror\, inspired by the perennial silent film classic\, Murnau’s Nosferatu. Peni Candra Runi is an extraordinary singer\, master of several traditional forms\, and regarded as one of Indonesia’s most daring young composers. Nugroho is a pioneer of Indonesian cinema represented in Cannes\, Berlin\, Venice\, and beyond.

SUMMARY:Natural Information Society - Perseverance Flow
DESCRIPTION:Music \nNatural Information Society (NIS) is a band led by composer and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Abrams. The group’s music is grounded in Abrams’ hypnotic and interwoven writing. \nPerforming with Lisa Alvarado’s free hanging paintings as mobile sets\, NIS creates environments at once meditative and propulsive\, which navigate forms that emphasize simultaneous differences\, rhythm\, and collective listening. NIS tours as a quartet with Abrams on guimbri\, Alvarado on harmonium\, Mikel Patrick Avery on drums\, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet. \n They will perform music from their recent album Perseverance Flow\, which refracts the band’s signature mesmerizing chains of overlapping rhythmic patterns through the sonic funhouse of dub.

SUMMARY:Ben LaMar Gay - Cold Was the Ground
DESCRIPTION:Music \nBen LaMar Gay is a composer and cornetist who moves sound\, color\, and space through folkloric filters to produce electro-acoustic collages. A Chicago native\, Ben’s true technique is giving life to an idea while exploring and expanding on the term ‘Americana.’ With his band\, the Ben LaMar Gay Quartet\, he will dive into the hypnotism of their cosmopolitan blues\, with old and new tales as well as selections from their latest release Yowzers via International Anthem. This work represents a leap forward in the lexicon of Gay’s recorded output and a veritable masterwork of ancient inner-body rhythms and intuitive melodic storytelling. The quartet consists of Ben LaMar Gay on cornet\, electronics\, and vocals; Tommaso Moretti on drums; Edinho Gerber on guitar; and Katie Ernst on bass. \n“…Elevating the diverse sounds of earth to the heavens.”– Andy Beta\, Pitchfork \n“Ben LaMar Gay’s music is full of wonder. It takes in the endearing glow of the natural world\, plus the endless variety of man-made refractions\, and then processes those beams and flickers into something strikingly original.” – AFROPUNK \n“There is no one universe for Ben LaMar Gay\, he just sonic booms from one sound to another.”– NPR Music

SUMMARY:Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe - Film Music Nsenene / Grasshopper Republic
DESCRIPTION:Film with Live Score / Music \nRobert Aiki Aubrey Lowe weaves together voice and modular synthesis for Nsenene\, a live interpretation of the score to the film Grasshopper Republic. Filmed over three years in Uganda and directed by Daniel McCabe\, this documentary follows a team of grasshopper trappers as they try ‘to catch the swarm.’ \nLowe’s live score—shifting between falsetto incantations\, resonant horns\, and trembling electronics—creates a charged sonic ecosystem where sound mirrors survival and the precarious interdependence between humans and the natural world. \nThis live performance is the furthering of the Grasshopper Republic film collaboration between Lowe and McCabe. Unused footage and stems from the film’s score manifest as an A/V performance conceptualized by Lowe in which he investigates the elements of the score to create a new landscape. \nPart science fiction\, part documentary and comprehensively filmed over\, Grasshopper Republic follows a local grasshopper trapping team\, in verité style\, as these modern-day prospectors push into remote forests and villages seeking their fortune by capturing this elusive prey by the barrel load. In deliberate contrast to this dystopian imposition\, specialized macro cameras simultaneously transport the audience into an immersive natural world on a level with the perspective of the Grasshoppers. This film is an immersive exploration of this strange\, beautiful\, and dangerous predicament which examines the balance between communities and ecosystems.

SUMMARY:Inside Out 2
DESCRIPTION:Opens June 14 and screens seven days a week\, with nightly 6 pm shows\, and additional 1 pm and 3:30 matinees on the weekends! Check our website for all dates and times. \nIn Pixar’s inventive and Oscar-winning Inside Out (2015)\, the personified emotions of young\, uprooted Riley help her navigate a new city\, house and school. But as Riley enters puberty\, those less complex emotions\, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts\, get a rude awakening when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone. Maya Hawke is Anxiety\,  trailed by triple-threat disrupters Envy\, Embarrassment and Ennui (Ayo Edebiri\, Paul Walter Hauser and French actress Adèle Exarchopoulos). The others at Headquarters\, including irrepressible Joy (Amy Poehler)\, don’t stand a chance. Dream parents Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan are also back trying to understand exactly what’s going on in there. Another classic in the making\, Inside Out 2 poignantly blends the see-saw hilarity and challenges of this universally awkward stage\, the way only Pixar can. 2024. PG. 100 min. Animation\, Adventure\, Comedy.

SUMMARY:I LIKE IT HERE Screening and Filmmaker Q+A
DESCRIPTION:Renowned documentary filmmaker Ralph Arlyck has never denied his urge to pick up a camera and document his life on film. Now\, as he approaches his 80s\, he delicately stitches this archive together to craft a compelling reflection on mortality\, community\, and the passage of time. Like having a conversation with an excellent interlocutor\, his poignant visual essay meanders through a life well-lived\, guiding us through portraits of Arlyck’s loved ones as he ponders the effects of aging and eventual death. Layers of time and connections unfold as footage shot across multiple decades interplay with each other\, blurring he firm boundary between past and present. This gentle and personal film embraces the beauty of everyday life\, reminding us of the simple pleasure of being alive. In every frame\, he conveys how it feels to look back on your own life\, to contemplate your place in an ever-changing world\, and what to make of the time that remains. \nQ+A with the Filmmaker and FilmColumbia’s Laurence Kardish\nThis lovely and deeply felt rumination on aging and living life to its fullest will be directly followed by a Q+A with Arlyck and FilmColumbia’s Co-Artistic and Co-Executive Director Laurence Kardish. The pair will discuss issues that often get left out of conversations about aging—like navigating isolation\, fear of death or losing a partner\, or simply what it feels like to contend with mortality at any age. Retirement communities and senior living facilities are encouraged to bring their residents to join this lively discussion to examine the ideas explored in his films. \nTo inquire about group bookings\, contact Dawn Steward at dsteward@crandelltheatre.org or 518-392-3445.

What made his “swagger” portraits of high society men and women remarkable was his power over his affluent sitters\, influencing what they wore and how they were presented\, often among the luxuriant splendor of their magnificent homes. Consider “Madame X\,” his showstopper in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Sargent collection. Last year\, “Madame X” traveled to Boston to appear in the Museum of Fine Arts’ “Fashioned by Sargent\,” the blockbuster Sargent retrospective organized by\, and now on display at\, the Tate Britain in London through July 2024. If you can’t get to London and missed the exhibition stateside\, which included some 50 portraits and many original dresses and fashion accessories from his paintings\, this beautiful film will transport you headlong into Sargent’s world. Director David Bickerstaff interviews MFA and Tate Britain curators and experts who detail this master painter and stylist’s genius. The film returns to the Crandell on Thursday\, April 25\, at 7 pm.
