SUMMARY:Lenio Kaklea: The Birds
DESCRIPTION:PS21 kicks off L’Alliance New York’s Crossing The Line Festival—and brings it to upstate NY for the first time ever—with Athens-born\, Paris-based choreographer Lenio Kaklea’s The Birds. Drawing on the vivid plumage\, songs\, and movements of birds\, this striking new work reflects on what it means to be seen and heard—and deepens Kaklea’s inquiry into ecology and the human impact on our environment. \nSeven dancers shift between dynamic individuality and the cohesion of a migratory flock\, navigating the tensions of predator and prey. Referencing mating rituals and territorial defense\, Kaklea’s choreography probes a society where freedom and subjugation exist in an increasingly precarious balance. \nThe Birds was presented in November at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles after its premiere at Montpellier Danse in July 2025. Kaklea’s works have been performed at Centre Pompidou\, the National Theatre of Chaillot\, Sadler’s Wells\, Kunstenfestivaldesarts\, Festival d’Automne\, the Serpentine\, Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection\, Palazzo Grassi – Pinault Collection\, New York Live Arts\, ImPulsTanz International Dance Festival\, Athens and Epidaurus Festival\, the National Greek Opera\, and Les presses du réel. \nThe Birds is co-presented by PS21: Center for Contemporary Performance and L’Alliance New York’s Crossing The Line Festival\nLead image © Albert Vidal and Vertex Comunicacio

SUMMARY:600 HIGHWAYMEN: FIVE YEARS
DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, interdisciplinary theater company 600 HIGHWAYMEN—Guggenheim Fellows Michael Silverstone and Abigail Browde\, described by Le Monde as “standard-bearers of contemporary theater-making”—began a visual record of life in rural New York. Each of their works takes a different form; here\, it unfolds as a sustained field of moving images. \nA PS21 commission\, FIVE YEARS is a multi-channel performance installation built from thousands of short clips\, gathered over the course of five years\, in close proximity to daily life.  \nThe footage moves between diary and observation—sunlight across a table\, hands in the dirt\, snow underfoot\, conversations in parking lots\, a taxidermy auction\, a neighbor’s bonfire\, a parade passing through town\, music from an open window. Shown side by side at large scale\, meaning builds through accumulation and adjacency. A child is born. Seasons turn. Routines take shape. \nAt the same time\, other things come into view: protests\, political action\, pandemic conditions. They sit alongside everything else––the domestic and the public\, what is seen close at hand and what unfolds beyond it. \nFIVE YEARS holds to this accumulation\, as more enters the frame: a portrait of time in an ever-fluctuating now.

SUMMARY:Annea Lockwood and Claire Chase: Elwha!
DESCRIPTION:Legendary composer Annea Lockwood has been a pioneer of field-recording and deep listening for decades—a composer of “insatiable curiosity” with “a singular ear for the music of the natural world” (The New York Times) and a special focus on the sounds of rivers. \nClaire Chase is a composer\, MacArthur Fellow\, Harvard professor\, and “the most important flutist of our time” (The New York Times). \nIn Elwha!\, they join forces on the river. \nAfter an astoundingly successful 2011-2014 dam removal project\, Washington’s Elwha River has become a model for ecosystem restoration projects throughout the world: “a thrilling example of what can happen when you take dams out of a river and it takes itself back.” \nElwha! is scored for seven flutes (bamboo water flutes\, glissando flutes\, piccolos\, alto flutes\, bass flutes\, C flutes\, and contrabass flutes)\, all performed by the brilliant Chase\, and multichannel environmental surround sound made from Lockwood’s field recordings of the Elwha. \nChase’s seven flutes respond to the multilayered and kaleidoscopic pitch\, rhythmic\, melodic\, and harmonic material of the Elwha and its many living inhabitants\, alternately conversing with\, rising above\, and being submerged by the wild musics of this iconic\, liberated river.  \nElwha! premiered in late 2025 at The Kitchen and is a part of Chase’s Density 2036\, a 24-year project to develop a new flute repertory leading up to the centennial of Edgard Varèse’s iconic flute solo “Density 21.5” in 2036.

SUMMARY:The Next Festival of Emerging Artists
DESCRIPTION:Praised for performances that “traverse the palette of emotions” with “gorgeous tone and an edge-of-seat intensity” (The New York Times)\, Grammy-nominated cellist and composer Andrea Casarrubios joins The Next Festival of Emerging Artists\, returning to PS21 for the fourth consecutive year. \nFor America’s 250th anniversary\, Next Fest presents a program of vital work by women immigrant composers. Artistic Director Peter Askim leads the string orchestra in world premieres by Iranian-American Niloufar Nourbakhsh\, Festival alumna Adeliia Faizullina (Uzbekistan)\, and Wang Lu (China)\, alongside timely works by acclaimed composers Clarice Assad (Brazil) and Aleksandra Vrebalov (Serbia). The centerpiece is a newly commissioned double concerto for cello\, percussion\, and strings by the Spanish-born Casarrubios\, which she will perform as soloist alongside the festival fellows. \nThe Next Festival of Emerging Artists is a trailblazing arts immersion program for early-career string musicians and composers from around the world\, providing them opportunities for mentorship\, performance\, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Their 2026 season celebrates the vital contributions of migrant women composers to the American musical landscape\, highlighting diverse\, global voices in this series of evocative world premieres. \nThe fellows of the Next Festival will spend the week prior to the performance in residence at PS21\, workshopping the pieces and conducting community engagements at Chatham Middle School. PS21 is proud to continue to deepen this relationship year-over-year.

SUMMARY:LaJuné McMillian - Constellations
DESCRIPTION:DATES:\nThursday\, February 19\, 2026\n5:30 pm \nFriday\, February 20\, 2026\n5:30 pm \nSaturday\, February 21\, 2026\n5:30 pm \nSunday\, February 22\, 2026\n5:30 pm\n______________________________\nWorld premiere \nDance \nConstellations is a performance from LaJuné that weaves figure skating\, movement\, and projected light into a study of connection\, memory\, and renewal. Skaters appear as moving stars whose paths intersect\, separate\, and return to one another in a shifting constellation of shared experience.  The work highlights detailed movement and close formation patterns: light\, shadow\, and motion create a cosmic landscape where moments of solitude blend with moments of collective strength\, while sound and color shape an environment that feels expansive and grounded at the same time. \nConstellations offers a portrait of community forming through movement. The performance centers care\, curiosity\, and the brilliance of embodied presence. The experience invites audiences into a world filled with resonance\, wonder\, and celestial energy.

The work reimagines Koyaanisqatsi — Godfrey Reggio’s seminal 1982 film — using a generative AI model and ongoing conversations between Fitzgerald and Reggio. \nCast onto a drifting veil of mist\, light gathers\, fades\, and returns. The image breathes\, loosening the boundaries between atmosphere and environment\, machine and element\, presence and disappearance. As the very ground beneath us shifts from terra firma to techno firma\, the installation lingers at the threshold\, asking quietly: which age is this\, the sunset or the dawn?

NOWISWHENWEARE (the stars) is a new interactive theatrical installation that pushes this idea to its literal extreme. \nAn unseen narrator guides each participant through an individualized journey into a precisely programmed matrix of light—and the cosmos of themselves. the stars traces every decision that you have ever made as a contributing factor to being ‘here’ and being ‘now.’ With nearly 4\,000 reactive LED lights and a 496-channel soundscape\, Andrew Schneider’s powerful installation draws you into a contemplative and deeply personal encounter with time\, memory and presence. Part-meditation\, part-exploration\,  this dazzling fusion of tech and theatre is a rare chance to get lost in the stars. \nTwo distinct experiences are offered in The Dark – Open Universe and Guided – each unique and compelling in different ways. \nThis is a non-seated\, interactive experience in which audience members are free to move around the space. The venue is wheelchair and walker accessible\, and chairs can be provided on request.

SUMMARY:Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou / Thomas Feng - Night Prayers
DESCRIPTION:Music \nAs a musician\, and as a nun\, Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou found peace in the night. At times she composed and played the piano into the early hours of the morning or woke as early as two o’clock to pray: “Everything is silent\, quiet\,” she explained\, “so you are more close to God.” \nIn Night Prayers\, pianist Thomas Feng performs compositions by Guèbrou alongside beloved works by Beethoven and Chopin that she kept in her room until her passing. Set amongst an immersive starscape installation by Andrew Schneider\, this program conjures the rarefied stillness and spirituality of Guèbrou’s nights.

SUMMARY:Andrew Schneider - NOWISWHENWEARE (the stars) Open Universe
DESCRIPTION:DATES:\nMonday\, February 16\, 2026\n1:00 pm—8:00 pm \nTuesday\, February 17\, 2026\n1:00 pm—4:00 pm \nWednesday\, February 18\, 2026\n1:00 pm—8:00 pm \nThursday\, February 19\, 2026\n1:00 pm—3:00 pm \nSaturday\, February 21\, 2026\n11:00 am—3:00 pm \nSunday\, February 22\, 2026\n11:00 am—6:00 pm\n___________________________________\nImmersive Experience / Theatre / Visual Art \nEvery point in space occurs once at each moment of time.
