SUMMARY:Hannah Epperson\, Rebecca Margolick\, Niloufar Nourbakhsh
DESCRIPTION:A catenary is the curve that an idealized hanging chain assumes under its own weight\, uniformly and perfectly flexible\, supported equally at both ends. \nDirected by Canadian-American violinist Hannah Epperson “one of the most stunningly unconventional artists making music today” (Bandcamp) and Canadian-American choreographer Rebecca Margolick (Dance Magazine’s Top 25 to Watch\, 2021)\, Catenary is a new interdisciplinary work\, making its world premiere at PS21 at the conclusion of a two-week residency. \nThe piece\, which combines live music and dance in innovative and exciting ways\, features three rising performers: Epperson\, Margolick\, and composer/pianist/electronics performer Niloufar Nourbakhsh (“darkly lyrical” — The New York Times). Throughout the performance\, the musicians become part of the choreography\, the gestural dance movements become part of the soundscape\, and traditional relationships are redefined. \nFeaturing innovative sound design and experimental instrument structures\, this dynamic new work opens a new and novel space for us all—performer and audience alike—to explore our relational potential together.

SUMMARY:Alex Tatarsky's "Sad Boys in Harpy Land"
DESCRIPTION:Sad Boys in Harpy Land is a clown play about wanting to die. A falling apart coming-of-age tale from playwright and self-proclaimed “experimental clown artist” Alex Tatarsky (“outrageous and profane\,” New York Times)\, the one-person show is a semi-autobiographical tour-de-farce that takes place in the hellscape of the mind. \nA “blistering\, brilliant show\, relentless in its invention\, humor\, and inquiry” (New York Theatre Guide)\, the piece is a deranged adaptation of Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister’s Theatrical Mission\, a novel about a little boy who wants to be a theater artist but isn’t very good at it. \nEmbracing the spiral\, the unfinished\, and the broken bits\, Tatarsky ushers audiences through a series of existential vignettes to examine how depression often masquerades as individual malady—when it might be better thought of as a shared sadness. \n“Tremendous…superb” — New Yorker (This Year’s Best Theatre\, 2023).

SUMMARY:Paul Taylor Dance Company
DESCRIPTION:“One of the most exciting\, innovative\, and delightful dance companies in the entire world.” — The New York Times. \nAugust 7—9 at 8 pm\nPS21 : Center for Contemporary Performance\n2980 Route 66\, Chatham\, NY 12037 \nThe legendary Paul Taylor Dance Company returns to PS21 for the fourth year in a row—this time for three nights. \nThis year they arrive with four selections from their repertory: Cascade (1999)\, a kaleidoscope of bright\, golden choreography and darker\, cooler undercurrents\, echoed by Johann Sebastian Bach’s keyboard concerti; 3 Epitaphs (1956)\, “a parade of faceless gray-leotarded figures to early New Orleans jazz…one of the funniest dances anywhere” — Newsday; Tablet (1960)\, an alien duet with set and costumes designed by Columbia County’s own Ellsworth Kelly; and Vespers (1986)\, choreographed by Ulysses Dove\, a ferocious work showcasing the athleticism and grace six female dancers set to a percussive score by Mikel Rouse.

SUMMARY:Hatched Ensemble (South Africa)
DESCRIPTION:In its US premiere\, Hatched Ensemble is an autobiographical work reflecting on South African choreographer Mamela Nyamza’s life as a mother\, lesbian and artist. Nyamza’s earlier work\, Hatched (2008) launched her artistic signature of unapologetically demystifying\, deconstructing\, and trampling on the norms and standards of the classics. \nIn Hatched Ensemble\, the work is extended to include nine classically-trained ballet dancers from different ethnic backgrounds. The dancers confront the deeply personal and challenging issues of tradition\, sexual evolution\, and racial and gender norms within the dance classics. Says Nyamza\, “Hatched Ensemble speaks to anyone who has felt conflicted about their own identity and where they belong in the status quo.” \nAccompanied by an opera singer and a traditional African multi-instrumentalist\, the piece juxtaposes disparate movement vocabularies\, referencing traditional African vocal scores\, classical Western music\, ballet\, and beyond. \nWith subtle gestures and enormous sensitivity\, Hatched Ensemble opens up a whole universe\, one that dance history would never have suspected to exist\, overflowing with urgency and subtle virtuosity. \n“Panoramic\, poetic and visually arresting work…her work is imbued with delicacy\, scope and a strong authentic intelligence” (The Times\, London)

SUMMARY:Brooklyn Youth Chorus\, Paola Prestini\, Jad Abumrad
DESCRIPTION:PORT(AL) is an epic new work charting the Brooklyn Navy Yard and a history of women’s work in New York\, co-created by the GRAMMY Award-winning Brooklyn Youth Chorus (“a mammoth choir that lends a shot of instant grandiosity to everything they touch” — Pitchfork)\, Jad Abumrad (Radiolab)\, Paola Prestini\, Jessica Grindstaff\, Ogemdi Ude and a chorus of 50 young singers. \nA mesmerizing new choral theater experience\, PORT(AL) opens a hidden doorway to the past within the depths of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Ebbing\, flowing\, and interweaving throughout this immersive piece are the voices of the youth chorus speaking to their relationship to their very own time and place\, and their future. \nVividly evoking and honoring Brooklyn’s ghosts\, PORT(AL) spins oral histories from recently passed figures like historian Howard Zinn and activist Clarence L. Irving\, Sr. Discover the hidden depths of the Navy Yard’s past\, where the trailblazing spirit of machinist and drag king Rusty Brown and the pioneering voice of mezzo soprano Eugenia Farrar surge like tidal waves. \nPORT(AL) is not just a performance; it’s an immersive passage through time\, where the boundaries between eras dissolve and the enduring spirit of the human story sets sail. \nPORT(AL) was partially developed in residency at PS21 in early 2025.

SUMMARY:CONTEMPORARY DANCE Co. Ruri Moto (Japan): 'Matou 'and 'Where We Were Born'
DESCRIPTION:CONTEMPORARY DANCE \nCo. Ruri Moto (Japan): Matou and Where We Were Born \nJanuary 4th & 5th 2025\, 3 pm\nPS21 Black Box Theater\n2980 Route 66\, Chatham\, NY 12037 \n‘Matou’ — Ruri Mito\nThe Japanese word “matou” denotes wearing\, putting on\, or being dressed in clothing. Figuratively\, it also refers to the process by which the outer layer of our skin is continually renewing and replacing itself\, much as snakes shed their skin. Matou\, a solo performance by dancer-choreographer Ruri Mito\, explores the body as a mysterious\, haunted vessel\, impossible to comprehend or observe in its entirety because it is in constant flux\, its cells endlessly dying and regenerating. Kim Dunphy\, in the Sydney Morning Herald\, called Matou a “mesmerizing spectacle\, ghastly and grueling\, but also gorgeous.” \n‘Where We Were Born’ — Co. Ruri Mito\nIn Where We Were Born\, Mito continues to scrutinize and explore the body as the defining element of human existence. Choreographed by Mito and performed by the seven dancers of her Co. Ruri Mito\, the piece weaves and unravels the delicately and intricately connected dancers\, creating one kaleidoscopic body. \nTickets>>> https://ps21chatham.org/events/matou-where-we-were-born/

SUMMARY:Half Waif Album Release Concert
DESCRIPTION:October 5\, 6:00 PM \nPS21 Pavilion Theater \n2980 Route 66\, Chatham\, NY 12037 \nGLOBAL | LOCAL MUSIC SERIES: \nHalf Waif (Chatham\, NY) Album Release Show \nwith Elori Saxl (Ghent\, NY) \nChatham-based singer\, songwriter\, and producer Nandi Rose\, who records and performs internationally as Half Waif\, premieres the songs from her new record\, See You At The Maypole\, released October 4th on ANTI- Records (Mavis Staples\, Tom Waits\, Fleet Foxes). \nWith the ability to “turn her voice into a choir” (The New York Times)\, Rose leads an eight-piece ensemble through this complex work\, which grows out of her classical piano training towards pop songwriting styles with experimental electronic production and expansive arrangements. The songs—performed live for the first time at PS21—each feature their own choreographed movement\, with lyrics that focus on themes of fertility\, loss\, motherhood\, mortality\, and the role of nature in healing. \nGhent-based experimental electronic composer Elori Saxl\, whose music is “more serene than Steve Reich\, more textured than Philip Glass” (Jayson Greene\, Pitchfork)\, transforms the rich resonances of experimental electronics\, digitally processed recordings of natural sounds\, and traditional chamber music orchestration into hypnotic counterpoint. \nTICKETS >>> https://ps21chatham.org/events/global-local-v-half-waif-with-elori-saxl/
